THE ISSUES AT HAND
Toussaint Romain was a public defender in Charlotte, NC and is an adjunct professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at UNC-Charlotte. He is a community advocate who serves as a member of the National Association for Public Defense’s Racial Justice Committee, helps with the Charlotte Human Trafficking Taskforce, and hosts monthly leadership training programs at federal prison and local youth detention centers.

Romain became a key civil rights leader and peacekeeper during the protests of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in September 2016. Join us in supporting Toussaint Romain’s campaign for Mecklenburg County District Attorney. We need YOUR VOTE on May 8th.

SAFETY
The current administration is not doing all it can to increase public safety. In fact, it is making things worse. My neighbor, Grandma White, is afraid to come out of her home. My other neighbor is a 90-year-old man who sleeps at his daughter’s home to avoid the people who live down the street from us. I proudly live in West Charlotte, but I am sad to see that my own neighbors are too afraid to come outside.

FAIRNESS
There are far too many “for-profit” deferral programs in the criminal justice system that only benefit those who can afford it. Experts say that 90% of people in the system live in poverty. Consequently, those who need these programs most are the very ones who can not afford them. I have challenged a for-profit program in our local jail and the sheriff made immediate changes. I want to continue making these kinds of changes as DA.

REFORM
We have more people with addiction and mental health issues in the system than we do those who commit violent offenses. We can treat mental health and drug addiction and reduce the number of people being funneled into the mass incarceration pipeline. We can focus our efforts on reducing violence. We can change this system and that is why I am running.
